IEEE-Seattle Student Paper Contest -- 2011

IEEE-Seattle hosts a yearly student paper and presentation contest for Seattle area schools. Students are given the opportunity to write a paper and present this paper to a board of IEEE-Seattle judges for a chance to win a cash prize for the top winner and the opportunity to advance to the IEEE northwest area paper contest. Topics covered by the paper and presentation can be anything related to engineering, from a paper on your capstone project to the importance of project management in a defense contract. The full guidelines for the competition can be found here.

The deadlines for the contest are as follows:
Feb 19   Paper Abstracts and drafts are due
Mar 5    Paper selections will be made
Mar 19  complete entries due
Mar 26  contest, hosted at Seattle University
A few notes:
  • The presentation will be hosted at Seattle University
  • All contestants must be IEEE members
  • IEEE-Seattle judges will choose the most promising papers from the pool of applicants to present (in total, about 15 presentations are made each year)
  • Although abstracts are due Feb 12, please include additional information with your submission such that judges can make a better choice between papers
  • Again, the rules can be found here
If you wish to compete, please contact Daniel Vishoot directly at dvishoot .at. uw .dot. edu with the subject "[IEEE Paper Contest]".

IEEE-Seattle MicroMouse Competition

Each year IEEE hosts an embedded, MicroMouse competition. The goal of MicroMouse is to build a robotic mouse that will autonomously solve a 16'x16' maze. The full rules and specifications for the competition can be found here. For all the digital EEs out here, this would be a great opportunity to put those skills forged in Professor Peckol's classes to the test!

This year, there is a possibility that a local Seattle area competition will be held in April. If not this year, there will be a Seattle area contest next academic year. As of right now, UW IEEE is forming a MicroMouse team such that mouse construction can begin now. To be clear, there is no formulaic approach to solving this problem -- this is essentially your project, and your chance to shine! For the team UW IEEE needs the following:

  • A junior or senior member who can take a leadership role -- preferrably also technical
  • Two junior or senior members with the embedded skills to make this happen
  • Two extras who can contribute -- EEs new to the departement are encouraged to participate
Interested parties should directly contact Josh Scotland directly at JoshScotland ,at, gmail ,dot, com with the subject "[IEEE MicroMouse]".
